INTRODUCTION - 'Mwamba' is a field study centre run by A Rocha Kenya, a non profit Christian Conservation Organisation. To help contribute to the costs of running environmental programmes and the study centre, we offer accommodation for up to 15 visitors in a friendly, family like atmosphere.
All and anyone is welcome to stay.
Mwamba is right on the famous Watamu Beach, about 3km down the beach from the big hotels so there is not a Beach Boy in sight.
All Guest Rooms have their own fans, mosquito nets and bathrooms. Simple yet delicious African Food (vegetarians are catered for) is served twice a day for all guests, volunteers and staff at lunch and dinner, with a self-service breakfast. As we are more of a field study centre than a guest house, all Mwamba residents including guests help out with washing of dishes after meals. Wherever possible, guests are more than welcome to join in any of the centre conservation activities that are going on at the time.
ROOMS AND RATES - we have seven guest rooms but can accommodate up to 15 visitors at any one time. Our booking system is on a first come, first served basis and since we do not operate a deposit system, your accommodation will only be held for you if you confirm 7 days prior to arrival. There is a Flat Rate Tariff of US$25 (or equivalent paid in Kenyan Shillings) per person per day which includes all meals and accommodation. Most of the time we have sufficient rooms available for guests to have their own; however, if we are busy you may be required to share a room with others. Alternatively, you can pitch your own tent on the premises at a reduced rate. We however ask campers to join in with meals as cooking facilities are not provided and camp fires not allowed.
FACILITIES AND GROUNDS - There is a small covered flat roof with a beautiful view (pictured left) available for guests or groups to relax on or use for small workshops. Beach access is via a 50m walk down our own path - the prime tourist snorkelling area is immediately out from our section of the beach and snorkelling permits and equipment are available from our office for a small charge. A basic hand washing laundry area is provided for guest use free of charge. Alternatively, guests can opt to have their clothes washed for them for a nominal charge. Cleaning of rooms along with fresh bedding and towels is provided twice weekly to all rooms by Mwamba staff. Use of cooking facilities is limited to cooking staff only - although guests are welcome to prepare sandwiches etc if they plan to be away for Lunch. Mwamba maintains a guided Nature Trail adjacent to the grounds that is free to all for their use. This area is used for regular Bird Ringing studies as part of the A Rocha Kenya Research & Monitoring Programme.
Located in the Watamu Area, there are a host of activities to keep guests interested, including: Gede Ruins, Mida Creek suspended boardwalk and bird hide, ASSETS tree platform and nature trail in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, BioKen Snake Farm, Kipepeo Butterfly Project and more.
